Accountant to Salesman: How I Took a Leap with Victory Lap

No one tells you how daunting it is to change your professional plans midway through your career. The process can be frustrating and demoralizing, leaving you exasperated and still “stuck” in a career that is no longer fulfilling. Many people don’t have the ability, time, or support it takes to switch their career path. But luckily, I did.

My path to Victory Lap started when I decided I wanted to leave my current accounting job and start a new career. I had always been interested in sales, yet knew that I might struggle with the initial application process. Leaving my job was a scary prospect, but I had always been interested in sales and wanted to try to break into the career. I still tried applying for a few positions while I was working, but without any sales experience, my accounting background was getting overlooked. I knew I had the skills, work ethic, and personality to be successful in a sales role, but on paper, I wasn’t a fit. I needed something to help jumpstart my sales career.

Fed up with the rejection and the lack of forward momentum in my job search process, I found Victory Lap. After being accepted into their two week bootcamp, I was still concerned with my ability to be hired. However, when I looked around the room at the other members in the bootcamp, I was inspired. Each and every one us came with a different story, but we all we there working towards the same goal. I was surrounded by a group of people with diverse backgrounds who were open-minded and ready to start in a sales career. Not only did we learn from one another, but we pushed ourselves - as a group - to step out of our own comfort zones and make the most of the two week session.

I’m not sure if I can express how grateful I am for Victory Lap and the opportunities it brought me. From the hands on experience I received while in the bootcamp, to the support I had when interviewing, it made my transition from accountant to salesman that much easier.

From Day 1 in the bootcamp, I was provided a realistic glimpse into the day-to-day life of a salesperson. I learned the sales fundamentals that were crucial to landing that first sales role. I could live-call and use that experience to speak about real life sales situations in my interviews. I was exposed and connected with some of the most exciting companies in the Chicago area. I connected with incredible salespeople who helped me grow my professional network. More importantly, I was able to take the skills I learned at Victory Lap and apply them to my current sales role.

Reflektion, an innovative tech company that offers personalization for the eCommerce industry, took a chance on me, and I couldn’t be more happy with where I landed. At Reflektion, I work in business development prospecting. I reach out to potential clients, set meetings and create a strong pipeline of leads. In the short time that I’ve been here, I have traveled to San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas to connect with professionals in eCommerce. Building off what I learned at Victory Lap, I’ve found an incredible team at Reflektion that I know will continue to coach me on how to push my sales career forward.

My advice to anyone who is on the fence about making a career change into sales and joining Victory Lap is this: do it! Victory Lap will set you up for success and give you the confidence need to take that step out of the comfort of your old career into the exciting potential of a new career. Victory Lap will challenge you to make the change you’ve dreamt about, but have never pursued. From one career changer to another, do it. Take a chance on Victory Lap, and take a chance on yourself. Starting a new career that you love is worth it.
